\Artist: École française du XVIIIe siècle - Entourage de Joseph-Benoît Suvée (1743-1807)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 41. 5_31. 5_3_cm
The work depicts a scene from the “Jerusalem Delivered” by Tasso. “Jerusalem Delivered” (‘La Gerusalemme liberata’) is an epic poem written in 1581 in Italian by Tasso, recounting a largely fictionalized account of the First Crusade, in which Christian knights led by Godfrey of Bouillon fought the Muslims (Saracens) to lift the siege of Jerusalem in 1099. Herminie of Antioch, who is a princess, seeks refuge in the shepherds' hut. These beautiful pagans, so touching in grief, so romantic in their adventures, with such tender emotions, keep the reader's attention, while battle stories, religious ceremonies, war councils and campaign plans can be passed without much inconvenience. The great artistic invention of Tasso is the poetry of feelings: for it is the expression of feelings, not the lyricism of the poem, that makes “Jerusalem” an immortal masterpiece. Some painters were inspired by the “Jerusalem Delivered. ” Joseph-Benoît Suvée painted several episodes, the most famous of which are kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes and Amiens, but we can also mention: - “Herminie gravant sur un arbre le nom de Tancrède,” Pier Francesco Mola, Louvre museum - “Tancrède et Herminie,” Nicolas Poussin, Louvre museum The work is in good general condition and has no major flaw. It is sold framed. Old lining. Secure and fast worldwide shipping.
