Economics.- Malthus (T. R.) Opyt o zakonie narodonaseleniia. [An Essay on the Principle of Population], translated by P. A. Bibikov, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition in Russian, half-titles, ink ownership inscriptions to titles, occasional pencil marginalia elsewhere, scattered spotting, contemporary half calf, rebacked preserving old spine, rubbed and bumped, uncut, 8vo, St Petersburg, E. E. Glazunov, 1868.

*** A key work in the history of economic thought by Malthus (1766–1834), the English economist and demographer. The translator, P. A. Bibikov, had substantial experience translating economic works, having rendered Adam Smith’s "Wealth of Nations" into Russian two years earlier. Malthus’s Essay, first published in 1798, had attracted attention in Russia by the early 1820s. In 1826, he was elected a foreign member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, and in 1830 received an honorary professorship at the Imperial St. Petersburg University. His work gained renewed significance in the 1860s amid major economic reforms, challenging prevailing assumptions about population growth and highlighting the economic consequences of population pressure, poverty, and limited food supply.
