Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. An impressive necklace comprised of 55 terracotta spindle whorls of black, brown, orange, and red hues - each one finely incised with intricately-delineated zoomorphic and avian forms - strung on a modern twine strand. A beautiful and wearable necklace! Size (necklace): 36" L (91.4 cm); size (largest bead): 0.875" W x 0.875" H (2.2 cm x 2.2 cm).

Provenance: private, Utah, USA collection, acquired 1986

Condition Report: Wearable as shown. Pottery beads are ancient, and stringing is modern. Repair to one bead with light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks and abrasions to some beads, fading to original pigmentation, and softening to some incised details. Light earthen deposits throughout.
