Ed Mell, Attributed: Desert Horizon at Sunset
Ed Mell (American, 1942–2024)
Striking Southwestern landscape composition depicting a vast desert horizon beneath an intensely dramatic sunset sky. Broad bands of crimson, orange, violet, and deep blue sweep across the upper half of the work in sharply angular, almost architectural formations, while distant mesas and desert landforms anchor the composition along the horizon.
The image reflects the distinctive modernist approach associated with Ed Mell, whose celebrated depictions of the American Southwest transformed traditional Western landscape imagery through bold geometry, simplified forms, and powerful atmospheric color. Here, the sweeping cloud formations dominate the scene, creating a sense of movement and monumental scale against the stillness of the desert below.
Executed in oil on canvas, with carefully blended color transitions combined with crisp geometric contours. The lower right is signed “ED MELL.â€
The reverse bears an inscription along the upper stretcher reading “© ED MELL 2004,†accompanied by an additional handwritten signature or artist notation. The canvas remains mounted on its wooden stretcher and is presented in a substantial stepped wooden frame visible in the photographs.
A visually commanding Southwestern work with excellent decorative presence, combining intense sunset coloration, expansive desert space, and the dramatic geometric language closely associated with Mell’s iconic Western imagery.
