Ed Wiener (1918-1991) was a self-taught modernist jeweler and was inspired by the works of Sam Kramer. In turn, he inspired a next generation of designers. Wiener opened his first shop in New York City in 1947 and later added several additional locations. He worked primarily in silver, casting free- form sculptures and emphasizing textured surfaces. Influenced by his travels to Asia, Wiener began to work more extensively in gold beginning in the 1960s. A retrospective of his jewelry was presented by Fifty/50 in 1988 and his work is found in numerous museum collections.
