Eddy, Mary Baker (1821-1910) Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Presentation Copy. Boston: Published by the Author, 1886. Octavo, later edition, inscribed by Eddy on fly leaf, "Mrs. F. McNeil Potter, with love from the Author, 1886," twenty-first edition, revised, 590 pages, frontispiece portrait, bound in contemporary half black morocco, marbled boards and edges, binding rubbed, corners considerably worn, shelf wear, housed in a custom clamshell box, 8 x 5 in.

The dedicatee, Frances (Fanny) Maria McNeil Potter (c. 1821-1892) was President Franklin Pierce's niece, and a distant cousin of Mary Baker Eddy. After the tragic death of the president's son Benny, Potter helped fulfill First Lady Jane Pierce's hostess duties at the White House. Eddy visited Potter at the White House in 1882, and their correspondence continues until Potter's death. Potter stood by Eddy and continued to promote Science and Health, while many other family and friends distanced themselves from Christian Science and its founder.
