Edelhout - Platter - Amboyna
Amboyna is actually a collective name for the tangled wood from tuberous outgrowths (burl) of various padauk species; a tree family that is mainly found in Asia.
The wood has no clear direction or grain, but a confused, erratic structure. It is often used decoratively, because its irregular structure can also be brittle and/or contain small cavities. It is particularly suitable for turning work and certainly sturdy enough.
The bowl is initially finished with a finish based on vegetable oils and resins including linseed oil, pine oil, rosemary oil and wax. A top layer of shellac and carnauba wax has been applied over this finish, which not only adds shine, but also seals the wood well against dirt or moisture.
