Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917) Femme s'essuyant Counterproof in pastel on wove paper 19-3x4 x 14-1x2 inches (50.2 x 36.8 cm) Stamped lower left: Degas Property from the Collection of Robert Aron, Palm Beach, Florida PROVENANCE: Degas Atelier Sale IV, July 1919, no. 322; Collection Mme. Ernest Rouart, Paris; The Alpha Gallery, Boston, Massachusetts; Acquired by the present owner from the above, December 1986. LITERATURE: Galerie Georges Petit, Catalogue des tableaux, pastels et dessins par Edgar Degas et provenant de son atelier, Paris, 1919, p. 272, no. 322; P.A. Lemoisne, Degas et son oeuvre, vol. III, Paris, 1946, p. 684, no. 1180 bis. The original pastel from which this counterproof was taken is listed and reproduced in the catalogue of the Degas Atelier Sale, No. III, 74, and in Lemoisne, no. 1180. The provenance of this counterproof is of special interest. Ernest Rouart was the son of Henri Rouart, an intimate friend of Degas and one of the great "amateurs" of his time. Ernest actually studied art under Degas and, with his wife, Julie Manet, the daughter of painters Berthe Morisot and Edouard Manet, carried on the family tradition by acquiring their own magnificent collection of modern French art.

Condition Report: Scattered dots of foxing to the paper surface. Scattered diagonal and horizontal soft creases to sheet, most noticeably a horizontal crease in the center of the work. Mat rubbing and toning to edges of sheet, not visible when mat is closed. A few small tears and losses to deckled edges of sheet, not visible when mat is closed. Sheet his hinged to board. Window mat measures 28 1x2 by 21 1x2 inches. Framed under glass.
