Edgar Degas 1p ALS

A 1p autograph letter in French signed by artist Edgar Degas (1834-1917) as "degas" within a folded postcard-letter postmarked from Paris, France on February 1, 1906. Degas has inscribed the inner panel with a 23-word message recto, and has also engrossed the address section verso. A few of the words of the message are light or only partly legible, as if Degas ran out of ink; a few letters have been retraced with pencil, possibly in another hand. Bearing numerous hand-stamped and one handwritten philatelic markings as well as a cancelled 15-centime green Marianne stamp. Expected wear including light toning, else near fine. 4.375" x 5.75." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Edgar Degas's brief note of congratulations to a friend illustrates the many personal ties connecting French Impressionists. Artists, art collectors, art dealers, models, patrons, and proteges, they often befriended each other, married each other, and conducted business together. Degas's letter is a perfect example of this insular world of intimate ties.

Degas wrote this note to Ernest Rouart (1874-1942), the son of his longtime friend Henri Rouart (1833-1912). Ernest had married Julie Manet (1878-1966), the daughter of well-known female artist Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), and the niece of Edouard Manet (1832-1883), the scandalous creator of "Olympia" and "Le Déjeuner Sur L'Herbe." Ernest and Julie had welcomed second child Clément Rouart (1906-1992) a few days earlier, on January 31, 1906.

Translated in full:

"Compliments to Julie and and [sic] to you upon the arrival of young Clément. Here I am retaken by the flu.

your old friend
Degas

Thursday."

Edgar Degas, Henri Rouart, Ernest Rouart, Julie Manet, Berthe Morisot, and Edouard Manet were all artists. At least three of them were also art collectors, two also served as artist's models, and Henri posed in a famous Degas portrait. Degas had gone to high school with Henri Rouart, and had served under his command during the Franco-Prussian War. Edgar Degas had introduced his friend's son to art, as well as to Julie Manet, the latter's future wife. In addition to being a close friend of Degas's, Ernest Rouart was authorized to sell Degas's work after the latter's death.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
