Edgar Mélik was born on 11 July 1904 in Paris. His family is of Armenian origin (Constantinople, Tabriz in Persia) . He is the cousin of the poet Rouben Mélik. A friend of women painters such as Consuelo de Saint Exupéry and Madeleine Dinès, he frequented artists such as Louis Pons, Richard Mandin, Max Papart, Gabriel Laurin, Léo Marchutz and André Verdet. He admired the mime Marceau, of whom he made several dreamlike portraits, and Edith Piaf, to whom he devoted 10 drawings and texts (Cabriès Museum edition) . In his writings, he celebrates the École de Paris (1925) , Fauvism, and Literary Surrealism. He worships Van Gogh and admires Picasso's break-up without adhering to Cubism. He seeks a "plastic spirituality" in his own words.
