Edith Roosevelt ALS With Puerto Rico Connection Penned Aboard the S.S. Coamo
ALS
A 1p autograph letter signed by Edith Roosevelt (1861-1948), who served as First Lady from 1901-1909, as "Edith Roosevelt" at lower right. March 21, [n.y.] N.p. On stationery embossed in red at the letterhead with the seal "The Porto Rico Line / S.S. Coamo." Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, with extra wrinkles. Isolated edge chipping and scattered stains recto and verso. Pen-inscribed by a former collector at lower left. Else very good. 5.5" x 8.5". From The Doug Wertman Collection.
Edith Roosevelt wrote to one "Miss Gaylord" from aboard the S.S. Coamo, a Porto Rico Line steamship operated by the New York and Porto Rico Steamship Company. Plying the waters between Brooklyn and Puerto Rico, the S.S. Coamo shuttled passengers and carried cargo. A later iteration of the ship, built in 1925 and used as a American troopship during World War II, was sunk by a German U-boat near Bermuda in December 1942.
In part:
"My dear Miss Gaylord
How good you were to send me the delightful book.
I had to begin at once and now I have reached the middle with always increasing pleasure and interest.
Many and grateful thanks.
Faithfully yours
Edith Roosevelt."
Edith Roosevelt had several connections to Puerto Rico: she had previously visited the island as First Lady in November 1906 while en route to the Panama Canal worksite; and her son Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. served as Governor of Puerto Rico from 1929-1932.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
