Edith Roosevelt Autographed Letter Signed on White House Stationery
ALS

An autographed letter signed, "Edith Kermit Roosevelt," 4pp, on bifold gilt embossed blue speckled White House stationery, by First Lady Edith Roosevelt, 4.25" x 5.5", Washington, n.d. [ca.1901-1909], to Frederick McGuire, the curator of the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Two inner pages blank. Central horizontal mailing fold. Foxing, age toning, and handling marks throughout. Minor fading of ink with isolated ink smudging to a few words. Accompanied by the matching 4.5" x 3" envelope. Mounting traces at right edge verso on both letter and envelope. Notations from previous collector on verso of envelope. Overall, very good.

McGuire was the curator at the Corcoran Gallery of Art located in Washington, DC. Due to his personal friendship with Mr. Corcoran, the founder of the gallery, it seems that McGuire had been connected with the Institution from its genesis. Based on Roosevelt's love of the arts, she and McGuire were frequent correspondents. During his presidency, Teddy Roosevelt recalled the painting "Love and Life" by George F. Watts, which was presented to President Cleveland, as Roosevelt felt it should be in the White House. With it being in the Corcoran Gallery, McGuire agreed that it would be returned to the White House upon the President and First Lady's exodus of the White House.

In full with original usage:

"Tuesday
My dear Mr. McGuire

Thank you so much for the photograph, the likeness is quite evident when I put it beside my boys'.

Would you mind writing the name under it and that you have given it to me.

I should like to send you one of my own photographs, - one that I think better than the Chartran, - if you like it.

Sincerely yours
[signed] Edith Kermit Roosevelt

We enjoyed our trip on the 'Sylph' immensely."
