Born in Puerto Rico in 1923 and raised in the vibrant landscape of Spanish Harlem, Edith Susarret Marrero was a lifelong artist whose work served as both a personal sanctuary and a professional calling. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors, laying the foundation for a career defined by technical excellence and emotional depth.
After a dedicated twenty-year career as a Special Education teacher within the New York City Public School system, Marrero returned her focus to art, her primary passion. She enrolled at the Art Students League of New York, studying under luminaries such as Joe Hing Lowe and Peter Cox. Notably, she was a protégée of Flora Giffuni, the founder of the Pastel Society of America, whose mentorship influenced Marrero’s sophisticated approach to color and form.
Upon relocating to Cincinnati in 2005, Marrero became a fixture of the local arts community, contributing to Art Beyond Boundaries and the Cincinnati Art Club. Her portfolio, spanning over sixty years, reveals a prolific mastery of portraiture. This collection offers a rare glimpse into the legacy of an artist whose every brushstroke simultaneously reflects both her expertly honed formal training and the resilience of the human spirit.
