Edmond ROSTAND (Marseille 1868–1918), writer, playwright, poet, and essayist.
A signed autograph letter addressed to a “dear colleague,” written from Villa Arnaga in Cambo-les-Bains, in which he discusses a matter involving Sarah Bernhardt and her theater. In 1898, she took over the management of the Théâtre des Nations by signing a 25-year lease with the City of Paris, the owner of the building, which she subsequently renamed after herself.
“I would be more than happy to join you in this matter; but have you consulted Madame Sarah Bernhardt? Are you certain she desires this municipalization of her theater—which you so generously seek for her glory and the interests of poetry? It would be very awkward for me to take any action in this regard without her or her son having asked me to do so, as they may have a different view of their interests than we do.”
