Edmund Gale (American, 1884-1975) Baseball Relie
Edmund Gale (American, 1884-1975) Baseball Relief!, Los Angeles Times newspaper cartoon and The Brussels Carpet, Los Angeles Examiner newspaper cartoon (two works) 1933; 1937 Ink on heavyweight paper 13-3x4 x 12-1x4 inches (34.9 x 31.1 cm) (Baseball Relief!, image) 14-1x2 x 12 inches (36.8 x 30.5 cm) (The Brussels Carpet, image) Each signed lower right: Gale Edmund Gale was born in Kentucky and moved with his family to Los Angeles, California by 1900. He was a largely self-taught artist who by 1907 was working for the Los Angeles Evening News and Los Angeles Times. His comic strip The Wad Family ran from 1911 to 1919. He was with the Times to 1934 when he left for the rival Hearst paper Los Angeles Examiner. Baseball Relief! is Mr. Gale's outstanding Depression-era World Series baseball cartoon that was published on the front page of the Los Angeles Times on October 2, 1933. Beset by inflation, tax and farm matters, Uncle Sam is attended by "doctors" from the New York Giants and Washington Senators who administer "World Series Dope" to their patient to bring him some relief. The Giants won the series in five games. Gale created The Brussels Carpet for the Los Angeles Examiner, and it was published on November 17, 1937. The Nine Power Conference—a meeting of the signatories of the Nine Power Treaty (1922)—convened November 3 in Brussels in an effort to end the renewed fighting between China and Japan that had broken out in July. In this delightful original conniving British and European statesmen work to set up Uncle Sam for another fall, hoping it will work "just as well as it did in 1917" when the US entered World War I only to settle for the miserable Versailles Treaty in the end. (image size: 14.5" x 12") Mr. Gale wrote "—in Los Angeles Times — 1933" below the image on Baseball Relief! The artist dedicated The Brussels Carpet above his signature: "Presented to Warren Woolard with the compliments of." He also wrote "—In Los Angeles Examiner - Nov. 17, 1937" immediately below the image at lower left.
