Édouard Manet Signed 1879 Calling Card: "Good for a pastel portrait"
Signed card

A calling card belonging to French Impressionist artist Édouard Manet (1832-1883), signed, inscribed, and dated in his hand as: "Bon pour un portrait au pastel / Ed. Manet / 26. Xbre 1879" [trans: "Good for a pastel portrait / Ed. Manet 26 December 1879."] [Paris, France.]The card is printed in calligraphy as "Edouard Manet / 77, rue d'Amsterdam." Isolated minor stains mostly affecting the edges, and a slightly blunted upper right corner, else near fine. 4.125" x 2.625".

This promissory note of sorts represented a guarantee for a future portrait. Édouard Manet had completed an oil on canvas self-portrait in 1879, "Self-Portrait with Palette," showing him with his artist's tools, and wearing a bowler hat, stick-pinned cravat, and buff-colored jacket. During this period - the late 1870s and early 1880s - Manet also began producing pastels on a rather unconventional support - canvas instead of paper.

Édouard Manet had relocated his art studio from the rue Saint-Pétersbourg to a nearby side street, the rue d'Amsterdam, in mid-1878. The Rue d'Amsterdam was located at the boundaries of the 8th and 9th arrondissements just steps away from the Gare Saint-Lazare and the Place de l'Europe. His address was at 77, rue d'Amsterdam, where the French novelist Alexandre Dumas père had briefly lived in the 1840s.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
