Édouard Marcel Sandoz
1881 - 1971

Carpe or Carpe Plongeante

1934
Patinated bronze and marble base
Signed Ed. M. Sandoz on a fin
68 x 45 x 22 cm ; 26 ¾ x 17 ¾ x 8 ⅝ in.

Condition Report:
This impressive and powerful sculpture by Édouard Marcel Sandoz is in overall good condition.
The patinated bronze surface presents with scattered minor surface irregularities, including a few scattered pinholes, inherent to the making.
We observe light areas of wear to the patina and light oxidation marks, mostly on the gilded parts and in the recessed areas of the fins, as well as very light vert-de-gris stains inside the lips and at the base of the lower fin, consistent with the normal aging process of the material.
We observe some liquid stains in places as well as light soiling in the recessed areas.
A close inspection reveals light scattered scuffs and surface scratches mainly visible on the chin and lips, all commensurate with age and none of which are visually distracting.
The marble base presents with scattered abrasions, tiny chips along the edges and a small loss to an upper corner.
This sculpture would benefit from a light professional cleaning to fully bring out the beauty and richness of its patina.

Catalogue Note:
Designed in 1934, upon his return from a stay at the Oceanographic Institute in Monaco, Carpe Plongeante exemplifies Édouard Marcel Sandoz’s profound fascination with the aquatic world. Through his exceptional mastery of bronze casting and patination, developing his own formulas by enriching his casts with copper, iron, and gold, the artist achieved surfaces of extraordinary depth and luminosity.

Infused with a powerful sense of momentum and marked by a distinct Japonist influence, the sculpture captures with remarkable intensity the precise moment the carp dives beneath the water’s surface. Carpe Plongeante ranks among Sandoz’s most accomplished models, showcasing his exceptional gift for composition, particularly in his bold use of the fin as the sole point of support. This daring solution lends the work both remarkable balance and an extraordinary sense of lightness.
