Édouard Marcel Sandoz
1881 - 1971

Condor

Designed in 1911, our example made in 1912
Patinated and silvered bronze
Signed Ed. M. Sandoz and with the foundry's mark E. ROBECCHI PARIS CIRE PERDUE on the terrace
38,5 x 60,5 x 21 cm ; 15 ⅛ x 23 ⅞ x 8 ¼ in.

Condition Report:
This impressive Condor cast in 1912 reflects Sandoz’s evolution towards animal sculpture, characterized by simplified volumes and pure forms.
The sculpture has been gently professionally cleaned and it is in overall good condition.
The patinated bronze presents with light surface irregularities inherent to the making as well as light areas of wear revealing the original colour of the bronze and light oxidation mainly on the silvered parts, consistent with the normal aging process of the material.
We observe light scattered scuffs, a few surface scratches and a few tiny dents in places, none of which affecting the overall aspect of the piece.
A close inspection reveals tiny vert-de-gris stains on the head and on the feather, as well as some light white oxidation mainly located on the feet and on the back and very light traces of soiling in places.
The terrace presents with some light discoloration stains, an area of rust on a side and a few tiny dents along the edges.

Catalogue Note:
A similar model was exhibited at the Edgar Brandt gallery in Paris during the exhibition Les Animaliers in 1927.

Provenance:
Hélène Rochas collection, Paris
