[ translate ]

Édouard Marcel Sandoz
1881 - 1971

Lady Mac-Dougal, Scottish Terrier

Designed in 1932
Patinated bronze
Signed Ed. M. Sandoz and with the foundry mark E. ROBECCHI cire perdue on the terrace
47 x 51 x 24 cm ; 18 ½ x 20 ⅛ x 9 ½ in.

Condition Report:
This beautiful and highly realistic full-scale sculpture is in good overall condition.
The patinated bronze surface presents with scattered minor surface irregularities, such as a few scattered pinholes, which are inherent to the making.
We observe areas of wear, mostly on the dog’s nose and the prominent parts of the dog’s coat, consistent with the normal aging process of the material.
A close inspection reveals some light scattered scuffs and surface scratches, all commensurate with age and none of which are visually distracting.
The terrace presents with some abrasions and a few tiny dents along the edges.

Catalogue Note:
Commissioned by the MacDougals, a collectors couple and friends of Édouard Marcel Sandoz, this sculpture immortalises their Scottish Terrier, Lady MacDougal, in a life-size portrait. Exhibited at the 1932 Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the present model is remarkable for its striking realism. The finely rendered, bristling coat and the dog's particularly expressive gaze endow the animal with an exceptionally vivid presence.

Sandoz returned to the model of Lady MacDougal in 1942 for his sundial project, in which two life-size Scottish Terriers flank a female figure. This reuse attests to the significance of the work within the artist's animal repertoire.

Provenance:
Sandoz workshop, Paris

Private collection, Switzerland, acquired by a friend of the artist who worked at the Natural History Museum in Switzerland

Xavier Eeckhout gallery, Paris

Acquired from the above
