Édouard Moyse, born Édouard Abraham, is the son of Moyse Abraham, a merchant who lives on Rue des Carmes in Nancy, and Rose Bernard. After a reversal of his first name and his father's name, he adopts the patronymic name Moyse 1. He came to Paris very young to study in the studio of Martin Drolling (1786 - 1851) at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He began exhibiting in 1845 and received his first silver medal in the Paris Salon in 1882. He is the first artist in France to depict scenes from Jewish life, such as the office in the synagogue, circumcision or blessing. In 1861 it was the presentation of the great painting A Synagogue in the Salon during the reading of the law. Moyse form with Edward Brandon, born in the same year
