Edward Avedisian (American, 1936–2007), Untitled, 1965 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Edward Avedisian was an American abstract painter and printmaker who became prominent in New York during the 1960s. His best-known work sets intensely saturated color against circular forms whose edges and internal bands shift according to their surrounding field. Avedisian was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s influential 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye and participated in several Whitney Museum annual exhibitions. His work is held by MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art.

Untitled, 1965, is a lithograph from zinc and stone printed in yellow and transparent pea green on Rives BFK paper and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. A nearly square transparent field lies within the yellow edge of the sheet, while a faint circle crossed by two broad bands appears near the upper left. Because the inks are close in value, the circle becomes clearer or less visible according to the angle and strength of the light. Inscribed in pencil on the verso “Tam. Imp.” and signed and dated “Avedisian 1965,” with two blindstamps including the Tamarind workshop chop. The inscription identifies this as a Tamarind workshop impression retained outside the regular numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 20 × 20 inches. Condition shows a few vertical tears extending upward from the lower deckled edge into the printed yellow border, with a small nearby edge loss and minor handling wear; the principal image remains clean and presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
