"Mammon & Co." by Edward Frederic Benson, published by D. Appleton & Co, NY, 1899. First US Edition with '1899' imprinted on the bottom of the title page and copyright.

Hard boards, original green cloth with black & yellow decorations and gold lettering on the front board and spine; the stamp of J. Griff Edwards is stamped on the front endpaper and title page, 5" x 7.1/8"; 360 pages, three original 1890s-1890s publisher's leaflets come with the book: see photos, [the leaflets slightly darkened the pages: see photos]; very good condition.

The story is set in the fictional town of Tilling based on Rye in East Sussex. Benson shows his skill as a story teller to weave a complex tale of wealth, honor and position. He recounts humorous incidents in the lives of upper middle-class characters who vie for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Mammon and Co (1899) is a humorous society drama set against the backdrop of stock market speculation featuring an array of highly despicable characters. An American girl is the good genius of the tale.

Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer and short story writer.

Provenance:

From the library of John Griff Edwards (1870-1912), he belonged to the old established settler families in Virginia. His father and uncles served in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. The grandfather, LeRoy Griffin Edwards (1804-1866), was the president of the Confederate Convention of 1864. John's wife, Mrs. J. Griff Edwards founded and led the first of the United Confederate Choirs of America (1907). After that she was elected the "Commander in Chief of the United Confederate Choirs." In 1911 she published a volume titled "Echoes From Dixie A Collection of Songs Used in the South."
