Edward Hargitt, Scottish 1835-1895- A cloudy day on the moor; oil on canvas, signed 'Edward Hargitt. / 1874.' (lower right), signed, titled, and dated '"A Cloudy Day on the Moor" / Edward Hargitt. 1874' on the reverse, 30.5 x 46 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work reveals the fascination which Hargitt, primarily known as an ornithologist and landscape painter, had with the natural world. The Scottish Highlands were clearly a significant source of inspiration to the artist and he returned to this setting throughout his career. The small scales of the figure and her dog in the foreground, and even of the bulky Highland cattle, emphasise the vast, windswept expanse of the open landscape beyond.
