Provenance:Purchased by the grandmother of the current ownersN.B.Edward Potthast began his career as a lithographer and illustrator but turned to painting full time in his late thirties. His earliest works were influenced by his studies at home in Cincinnati and at the Royal Academy in Munich, but several trips to Paris shifted his palette from subtle and tonal to the bright sundrenched colors for which he is best remembered. Once Potthast embraced French Impressionism he created sunny beach scenes and landscapes often populated with children exploring or playing. By the mid-1890s Potthast had relocated to New York City, where he found engaging subject matter in Central Park and on the beaches of Long Island. Summers were spent visiting Gloucester, Rockport, and Cape Cod in Massachusetts, and Ogunquit and Monhegan Island, Maine. Potthast depicted the Ring Around the Rosie subject several times during his career arranging the children in bright, springtime fields like the example here, as well as on beaches.
