Winter river scene, 1917
Oil on board
Signed and dated lower right: Edward J. Holslag. 1917
15 1/4 x 17 3/4 in.
Provenance:
The verso of the board shows three names, each hand-written by the same person (one above the other), possibly listing former owners: Mr. Z. C. Wilkinson[?] / Russell Words[?] / Lee Plaza[?]. Additonally, "MYD/14" is inscribed four times on the verso, also by a later hand (possibly a former owner)
Condition
Visual: Dust accumulation and significant grime throughout. Scattered craquelure, occasionally with attendant pea-sized (or smaller) paint losses, such as near the upper right corner. The hint of an old 3 inch crease stretching diagonally across the upper right corner, visible primarily in raking light, and possibly inherent in the original board as selected by the artist. A possibly unrelated drip of old paint extending 3 1/2 inches horizontally from the center of the left edge, visible primarily under blacklight. The artist's painting style for this work reveals numerous areas of a gray gesso layer scattered throughout. Staining and wear to the upper corners of the board. The painting is possibly unvarnished. Blacklight: No evidence of restoration. Frame: 22 1/2 x 25 x 1 in.Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
