Edward Swinburne and his brother John were patrons of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), which is indicative of their wider passionate engagement in contemporary artistic developments. Indeed, the influence of Turner's style can be discerned in the present work, particularly through Swinburne's atmospheric exploration of the effects of light, contrasting the peach sky above with the darkness of the river below.
