Antique steel engraving, 1873"Juliet in the Cell of Friar Lawrence" (Romeo and Juliet), engraved by Herbert Bourne after painting by Edward Matthew Ward, original antique steel engraving c.1873, "E.M. Ward, R.A. Pinx" and "H. Bourne, Sculpt."

Reference: another copy of this print is located in the British Museum, London [British Museum's Registration number 2001,0729.25]

The print was first published in 'The Art Journal' (February 1873). The original painting was exhibited at the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1867 (no.80); in 1873 it belonged to the collector Andrew Holtz; on 21 April 1894 it appeared in an anonymous sale at Christie's (information from Donato Esposito).

The main characteristic of a steel engraving is that it has a very sharp, hard-edged, precise image. The computer scan can only give a very general impression of the detail. During the printing process, the steel plate does not need so much pressure as the copper plate, therefore, the steel plates do not leave a deep impressed area in the paper like the copper plates do.

US: Priority (c.2-4 days) --------- $9.50
Canada: 1st Class (c.2-6 weeks) -- $22.50
World: 1st Class (c.2-8 weeks) --- $31.50
