Edwin Cooper A grey and bay hunter in a landscape
The Property of the Marquess of Anglesey from the Private Apartment at Plas Newydd
Edwin Cooper
British, 1785–1833
A grey and bay hunter in a landscape
illegibly signed and dated lower right: [...] / 1805
oil on canvas
unframed: 64.8 x 77 cm.; 25½ x 30¼ in.
framed: 72.6 x 85.6 cm.; 28⅝ x 33¾ in.
Condition Report:
The canvas is unlined. The paint surface is slightly dirty, as is noticeable in the sky and on the coat of the white horse. The varnish is clear, but uneven in places. Faint lines produced by old stretcher bars can be noted adjacent to all four margins, though these are not too distracting. A patch is visible on the reverse of the canvas, which provides extra support. Inspection of the front of the canvas confirms damage to this area in the form of a repaired tear and paint losses that have been partially filled in. A handful of other paint losses can be noted throughout the composition, in the tree leaves and in the grass lower right. A few retouchings, visible to the naked eye, are scattered throughout the canvas: these can be found primarily in the sky, filling in the aforementioned losses, and covering the tear. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these as retouchings, while also revealing a couple of smaller spots in the sky. Overall, the painting is in fairly good condition.
Provenance:
Painted for Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768–1854);
Thence by descent.
