EECKHOUT, Jacques-Joseph The Sailor’s Farewell. The Hague ca. 1831-1844 Drawing, pen and black ink, whith brown and white wash, 16 x 20,5 cm, thick paper, signed at lower left "J.J.Eeckhout". Eeckhout (1793-1861) was a Flemish painter, sculptor, pastellist, water-colourist and lithographer and a Director of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He produced mostly genre scenes and historical paintings. While working in The Hague (1831-1844) he was keen on portraying the maritime life of Scheveningen, of which this fine drawing is an excellent example.
