A bronze Usubata Ikebana vase, Japan, Meiji period, late 19th century

A vase supported by a dragon on a rocky landscape. Usubata comes from the shape of the vase, a thin opening at the bottom and an upturned large rim. Ikebana comes from the school of "Ikenobo", the school that practised the art of flower arranging. As such, the vase was meant to hold these flower arrangements.

Height 22, diameter 30 cm.
