A fragment of a wall relief from a tomb, Asyut area, 11th dynasty, Egypt, after ca. 2134 BCE

A Middle Kingdom limestone fragment of a wallrelief, traces of polychromy, depicting a ship with paddlers and a crouching steersman indicating the rhythm on the front of the deck, the sails lowered, three vertical registers with hieroglyphs above. Including certificate of authenticity Mrs. M. Zilverberg, Amsterdam. Note: when the river Nile was navigated from North to South, sails were always hoisted to take advantage of the Northern wind. When sailing down the Nile from South to North, the sails were always lowered, providing speed by the natural current of the river in combination with rowing power.Provenance: collection mr. H. de Munter, thence by descent to the present owner, acquired at Galerij Ancient Art B.V., Amsterdam, 1977.
