Eggleston's first novel and an important work of 19th century American fiction. Bookplate of Frederick W. Skiff.

Eggleston's sympathetic and realistic account of the life of a school teacher in rural Indiana was an attempt to bring a slice of Western backwoods life to American readers who, he states in the preface, are over-exposed to the "manners, customs, thoughts and feelings of New England country people." The Hoosier School-Master was immensely popular: within a month over 50 thousand copies were sold, and it was soon translated into Dutch, German, Danish and French
