Egyptian 26th Dynasty Glazed Faience Ushabti

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th Dynasty, Saite Period, ca. 664 to 525 BCE. A beautiful, mold-formed faience ushabti covered in layers of lustrous blue-green glaze. The figure stands in mummiform with a fused lower body, holds the symbolic pick and hoe in hands crossed atop the rounded chest, and has a seed bag displayed behind the left shoulder. The peaceful countenance bears almond-shaped eyes with elongated canthi, a triangular nose, full lips, cupped ears, and a plaited false beard, all beneath a simple tripartite wig. Four full and two partial horizontal rows of hieroglyphic inscription are displayed on the lower body and, while untranslated, provide the name of the deceased as well as a protective incantation from Chapter 6 of the Egyptian Book of the Dead (or the Book of Going Forth by Day). Size: 1.8" W x 5.2" H (4.6 cm x 13.2 cm); 6.875" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition Report: Losses to legs on lower body as well as areas of false beard as shown. Nicks and abrasions to body and head, with softening to some finer details and hieroglyphic symbols, fading to areas of original glaze, and light encrustations. Great glaze coloration throughout.
