Egyptian Bronze Falcon Head Finial of Ra

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom to Late Dynastic Period, 18th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 332 BCE. A beautiful cast-bronze furniture finial depicting the head of Horus, the falcon-headed god of the sun. The head exhibits characteristic avian features like a heart-shaped face, petite eyes beneath thick brows, and an aquiline beak, and beneath is a single incised groove indicative of a wesekh collar. The raptorial visage is framed within the striated lappets of a tripartite wig, The hollow interior cavity suggests that this head was once an adornment for a steerable record book which contained sacred texts and was guided by priests during processional occasions. Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896

Condition Report: Coarse encrustations across most surfaces, with softening to some facial details, and a few stable hairline fissures along lower peripheries, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout.
