Egyptian Carved Steatite Heart Amulet

Ancient Egypt, late Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 25th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 744 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved steatite heart amulet of mottled dark brown and beige hues in the form of an acorn-shaped jar with triangular lug handles protruding from each side as well as a knob-handled lid on top. Petite amulets like this example were perhaps sewn into the linings of mummy wrappings or placed atop the body prior to burial to preserve the body, heart, and soul of the deceased before venturing forth into the afterlife. Size: 0.51" W x 0.8" H (1.3 cm x 2 cm)

Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896
