LOT 0001A

Egyptian Faience Kohl Vessel - Blue Lotus Form

[ translate ]

Egyptian, New Kingdom, ca. 1500 BCE. A beautiful faience kohl vessel finely modeled and decorated to resemble a blue lotus flower. The Egyptians held this particular flower in the highest esteem, treasuring the lotus for its fragrance as well as for its habit of following the sun's lead - opening at daybreak and closing at nightfall. The blue lotus became a potent symbol of the hope for eternal life. Given this, it is likely that this petite vessel was not made for practical use but rather was placed in a temple as a special votive offering to a god. Size: 1.625" W x 2.9" H (4.1 cm x 7.4 cm); 3.2" H (8.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex private DK collection, New York, USA, acquired in 2000s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
