Egyptian Hyksos Glazed Faience Scarab

Egypt, Second Intermediate Period, Hyksos Period, 15th to 17th Dynasties, ca. 1674 to 1549 BCE. A beautiful mold formed faience scarab of the Hyksos period. The domed back is incised with the stylized characteristics of the beetle's wings and legs. The flat underside face has three rows of hieroglyphs that are too faint to read. The scarab is pierced for suspension. Amulets and pendants of the scarab were immensely popular for thousands of years in ancient Egypt, worn and carried by the living, and by the time of the Third Intermediate period, they had also become part of the increasingly elaborate ensemble of funerary pieces intended to protect the deceased. The blue faience of this example is quite attractive and symbolized the fertility of the Nile River. Size: 1.125" L x 0.75" W (2.9 cm x 1.9 cm)
