LOT 0003

Egyptian Late Dynastic Horn Votive / Rhyton, Inscribed

[ translate ]

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 350 to 1 BCE. A very rare find - a cow horn used either as an ancient votive or based on deliberately opened end, as a form of rhyton. Inked inscription on its interior curve and a cartouche bearing the throne name of Pepi II, reading 'The Good God, Lord of the Two Lands, Neferkare [Beautiful is the Soul of Re], Given Life for Eternity.' This horn was tested using C14 carbon dating which placed the age at about 2000 years + or - 400 years. If this is accurate, that would most likely indicate the inscription was added at a later date, perhaps even in modern times. A fascinating artifact from Egypt. Size: 2.2" W x 7.4" H (5.6 cm x 18.8 cm); 8.3" H (21.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA; ex-private North London, UK collection; ex-private UK collection, 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
