Egyptian / Levantine Bronze Crescent Axe

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $500**

The Levant or Egypt, Middle Bronze Age II/Middle Kingdom, Egyptian Dynasties 11 through 13, ca. 2000 to 1800 BCE. A bronze, crescent-shaped axe with a bulbous detail at its center and three places for attachment to a handle. It was cast using the lost wax technique. The Middle Bronze Age was a time throughout the Near East and Egypt that saw increased fortifications and the rise of palace-towns that controlled nearby villages and vied for power. An axe like this may have been used in warfare, but it would have been ultimately deposited as part of a warrior burial. Elite males of all ages were buried, often in caves together with their extended family, and interestingly, with axes like this one at their heads. Size: 2.25" W x 12.4" H (5.7 cm x 31.5 cm); 13.1" H (33.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in 2016; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-John Piscopo collection, San Diego, California, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#151098
Condition Report: Small loss from one tip and a few chips from the edges, but overall the form is very well preserved with a rich, dark green patina and some light deposits on the surface.
