LOT 0007C

Egyptian New Kingdom Alabaster Jar w/ Incised Lotuses

[ translate ]

Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 1292 BCE. A finely carved alabaster vessel presenting an elegant piriform body with a short cylindrical neck that flares at the upper end resolving in a flat rim and sits upon a flat base. Incised on the form, running from the base of the neck past the shoulder of the vase are three lotus flowers. In ancient Egypt, the lotus symbolized the sun, rebirth, and creation. In addition, it was the symbol of Upper Egypt. The lotuses on this vase may have been a reference to Atum-Ra, the Sun God, or Nefertum, the lotus god of perfume. Finely hand-carved from banded alabaster, the form is translucent. When held to the light, one can see attractive white veining coursing through the champagne hues of the stone. An absolutely exquisite form likely used to store precious aromatic perfumed oils! Size: 2.625" in diameter x 4.25" H (6.7 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Norman Blankman collection, New York, USA, 1950s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#149969
Condition Report: A couple of minute, nearly invisible, nicks to periphery of the rim. A u-shaped pressure crack to the shoulder. Expected surface wear commensurate with age, but the incised motifs are still vivid. Nice veining. Scattered deposits grace the surface.
