Egyptian New Kingdom Graywacke Heart Scarab
Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th to 20th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 1070 BCE. A lovely example of an ovoid heart scarab, hand-carved from dark green graywacke and presenting with pleasingly smooth surfaces. The topside of the insectile amulet features a folded wing carapace with incised striations, delineated legs with frilled tips, a semicircular head, and a serrated frontal clypeus. While the underside is unadorned, heart scarabs would traditionally have Chapter 30B from the Book of the Dead (or the Book of Going Forth by Day) inscribed on it. Remains of light brown embellishments, perhaps enamel, are visible within many recessed areas along the topside and suggest how attractive this scarab was at one time. Size: 1.75" L x 1.2" W x 0.625" H (4.4 cm x 3 cm x 1.6 cm)
Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896
