Egyptian New Kingdom Quartzite Head Fragment

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom Period, 18th to 20th Dynasty, ca. 1549 to 1076 BCE. A beautiful fragment of a finely detailed head, hand-carved from glinting, cream-hued quartzite. The fragmentary head presents with delicately sculpted features such as almond-shaped eyes with slightly elongated canthi, gently arching eye brows, a slender nose that gradually expands near the nostrils, smooth cheeks, and cupped ears. Topping the head is a simple yet elegant tripartite wig that sits low on the forehead with broad lateral panels, a delineated headband, and a frontal uraeus cobra in relief. The overall style of figurative sculptures like this example was heavily influenced by the facial characteristics of the reigning pharaoh and their corresponding statuary. This head in particular bears features that most closely resemble Pharaoh Ahmose I (ca. 1550 to 1525 BCE), though some characteristics also resemble those of Pharaohs Thutmose I, Thutmosis III, and Amenhotep II. Condition Report: This is a fragment of a larger figurative sculpture. Losses to lower half of face, areas of nose, and frontal uraeus as shown. Minor abrasions and nicks to face, ears, wig, and top of head, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits throughout.
