Egyptian Ptolemaic Faience Bowl, ex-Sotheby

Ancient Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 305 to 30 BCE. A large, hemispherical bowl, probably made for giving votive offerings, composed entirely of thin, pale green faience. The construction is remarkable, given how thin the material is. "Egyptian faience" was known as "tjehnet" to the ancient Egyptians, meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements, including copper oxide, which gave it its distinct coloration. Egyptians often used it for sacred items.
