Egyptian Ptolemaic Painted Limestone - Erotic Horus

[ translate ]

Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved limestone figure depicting a nude Horus (also Harpocrates, Harpokrates) upon an integral rectangular plinth. Horus rests in a kneeling position with legs tucked beneath his body, and his arms are held atop an enormous phallus with an incised head and a wide shaft. His upright head features almond-shaped eyes with elongated outer canthi, a broad nose, thin lips above a clefted chin, and cupped ears, with a smooth top, and a curl of hair - known as the "sidelock of youth" - cascading down one side. Thick traces of red and black pigment accentuate the figure in a manner consistent with fine Ptolemaic-era artistry! Size: 4.4" L x 1.5" W x 3.2" H (11.2 cm x 3.8 cm x 8.1 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-collection of the Bouillon Bey, Luxor, Egypt, acquired in the late 19th century CE

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
