Egyptian Sodalite Amulet Ram Form, ex-Royal Athena
Ancient Egypt, Late Period, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A beautiful, hand-carved sodalite ram with a petite integral loop upon its back for wearing as an amulet. Carved from a single piece of stone incised with lines to form a rounded back and a head with a t-shaped nose, framed by two horns that hang down to the chin, and the head juts slightly over the neck. Two lines indicate a tail and an incised line around the body defines the base it lies on. The ram is symbolic of Khnum, one of the oldest Egyptian deities, believed to be the source of the Nile River and the creator who molded human bodies and other deities from the rich silt along the river's banks. A beautiful ram amulet that was believed to bestow the wearer with virility. Size: .75" L x .5" H (1.9 cm x 1.3 cm); .875" H (2.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private St. Clair Shores, Michigan, USA collection; acquired from Royal-Athena in September 1996, ex-Monnier collection, Paris, France - On loan to Ball State University Art Gallery; George Mason University, and Fitchburg Art Museum from 1997 to 2015.
