Egyptian Taweret Statuette
Ptolemaic Period, 332-30 BC. A carved stone figure of goddess Taweret in hippopotamus form standing with hands on her abdomen, lappets of the base of a wig on her shoulders; the hippopotamus head attached and probably later; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Andrews, C., Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, pl.39. 610 grams, 13.6cm (5 1/4"). From the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister; from her collection formed early 1960s-1990s.
