[ translate ]

A handsome Egyptian cartonnage over wood Ptah-Sokar-Osiris, c. 764 - 332 BC, perhaps representing the deceased rather than the deity himself, depicted mummiform, wearing tripartite headdress and false beard, arms folded over the chest, hands clutching flails. The front of the legs with a painted panel containing 11 horizontal lines of hieroglyphic text, the characters beautifully and cleanly rendered with wonderfully preserved and colored hieroglyphs. H: 11 1/3 in (28.8 cm). The figure is well-preserved with original paint beneath light surface deposits. This figure represents Ptah-Sokar-Osiris, either in his human form or more likely in the formed of the deceased. He was a composite deity combining the creator god of Memphis - Ptah; the patron of the Memphite necropolis - Sokar; and ruler of the underworld and principle deity of the afterlife - Osiris. All together they represent birth, death and resurrection. Ex Chicago private estate.
