Einstein on Henrick Lorentz, Arnhem's "great son"

Albert Einstein Single Page Type Letter Signed in German on letterhead of "A. Einstein, 112 Mercer Street, Princeton New Jersey". Written to V.A. Loewenthal. Dated "January 5, 1954", and signed by Albert Einstein in blue ink "A. Einstein". Expected folds, near fine with some uneven toning. 8.5" x 11". Accompanied by an English translation of the text.

Einstein sends thanks to his correspondent in Arnhem who has sent Einstein photographs, evidently of the now-famous Lorentz Monument in that city. He writes in part "I find the memorial very tasteful and am happy that the city of Arnhem is aware of the significance of its great son"

Lorentz, born in Arnhem in 1853, was a leading physicist who played a key role, among many other contributions to science, in the development of Einstein's thought. "The so-called Lorentz transformation (1904) was based on the fact that electromagnetic forces between charges are subject to slight alterations due to their motion, resulting in a minute contraction in the size of moving bodies. It not only adequately explains the apparent absence of the relative motion of the Earth with respect to the ether, as indicated by the experiments of Michelson and Morley, but also paved the way for Einstein's special theory of relativity."
