Elbaite, Quartz & Lepidolite Himalaya Mine, Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA "A 10 cm matrix specimen of quartz crystals with a gemmy pink and green crystal growing from the quartz associated with a little lepidolite. Bought the specimen from Norm Dawson." - Rock H. Currier If you have spent any amount of time in Southern California and you collect "rocks," it's pretty hard to escape acquiring a Tourmaline from one of the great sources for this colorful gem mineral: the Himalaya Mine in Mesa Grande. Discovered in 1898, the mine has produced literally tons of Tourmaline over the 120+ years of sporadic operation. While most specimens consist of loose, single crystals, occasionally some matrix pieces are found and the best of these, feature a mix of associated minerals, like the combination of Tourmaline, Quartz crystals and the small amount of lilac Lepidolite seen here. Rock purchased this specimen for $100 from Norm Dawson in 1963, just as he was beginning to build his mineral collection; that was big money in those days. Overall Measurements: 3.9 x 2.8 x 1.6 inches (10.0 x 7.0 x 4.0 cm). Offered at no reserve Provenance: Bought from Norm Dawson [RHC #564, acquired 1963] [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
