Elbaite (Tourmaline) Komu pegmatites, Atisbo, Oyo, Nigeria 10.7 x 3.0 x 1.8 cm (4.21 x 1.18 x 0.71 in) Superb and gemmy Elbaite doublet from western Nigeria weighing a hefty 101.9 grams. At first glance, the Tourmaline has a darker silhouette with eye-catching cranberry-red zoning tracing its edges and terminated points; both terminations have thin blue streaks that highlight their acute slopes. With backlighting the Tourmaline shows a near water-clear interior with dusky green zones that intensify towards the bottom of the piece. Save for a bruise hidden on the reverse side, the specimen is well-formed, free of repairs and restorations, and presents well from virtually any angle. Many of the Elbaite crystals from the region were ultimately cut and sold as gemstones, limiting the number of available, excellent-quality Nigerian Tourmalines.
